This is a georgous area! And the hike is fun too!
For this adventure, we left Boulder Saturday afternoon and headed way south to the Sange de Cristo mountain range. Paul and Jay did some offroading on a dirt road in a Outback and Prius, respectively. The Prius made it about two-thirds of the way to the trailhead. We stoped about a half mile before the trailhead and setup camp for the the night. It was a decent site, but was in the trees without a nice view. We did have a campfire and cooked our dinner of sweet potatos on it.
The next day we arose at 5:30 am and drove to the trailhead and then started our hike. The clouds we really cool in the morning and actually all day. Above treeline we entered a large alpine meadow and found what I belive are young big horn sheep, but someone else thought they were goats. After seeing the wildlife the trail starts going up and up and up. And then you get on a scree field and do the finall up and up until the summit. The scree field looks a lot steeper and more difficult than it is. We reached the summit a little before 10:00 am.
The way down was fairly easy going. We stoped for a nice break in the meadow. We were surprised at the number of marmots that all seemed to be very overweight. Maybe they get a lot of snacks from hikers. All in all this was a great trip.
