Fabi's Cabin Trip

When was the fun: November 27-29, 2009
Who went: Mark, Kathleen, Dave, Colin, Tim, and Hona
Length or hike: 5 Miles to Cabin
Time on the trail: 5 hours
Distance from Boulder: 5 hours
Adventure was near: Aspen

Fabi's Cabin is located near Aspen Colorado. This destination is relatively far from Boulder, but because of the long Thanksgiving the extra distance wasn't too bad. With that said I'll move onto what we actually did. We left the day after Thanksgiving and found the trailhead after exploring the maze of roads between massive houses on the outskirts of Aspen.

We started up the trail around 11 AM and Kathleen and I were glad because there was just enough snow to use our x-country skis. The trail up to Fabi's Cabin is almost all uphill with many sections of the trail being rather steep. We arrived at the cabin just before dinner time. Exploring around the cabin we discovered that the best view was from the outhouse! The outhouse has two walls with floor to ceiling windows with magnificent views of distance peaks. After dinner we started the book we brought "Sail" by James Patterson. Each night Kathleen and I took turns reading the book aloud to the rest of our group. Tim joined in on the reading during the chapters containing a scandalous character known as Bailey.

The next day we went sledding on a hill right next to Fabi's Cabin. The hill was fairly steep and Dave, Colin, and Tim built a jump. Kathleen and I were the test pilots. The day was also filled with x-country skiing and snowshoeing around a large pond and swampy area near the cabin. This open area offered some views of surrounding mountains and we spent a lot of our time exploring around it.

The last day Kathleen and I did one last x-country ski trip around the bog and then hit the trail back to the van. As I mentioned before, the trial was all uphill on the way in which means all downhill on the way out. The downhill was a blast on x-country skis until we got down to low and started to hit rocks because the snow wasn't deep enough. But even with the rocks the trip out only took a couple hours.
