La Plata Peak

When was the fun: October 3rd, 2009
Who went: Mark, Kathleen, and Colin
Length or hike: ~9.5 miles Roundtrip
Elevation Gain: 4,500 feet
Time on the trail: 9 hours (including nap time)
Distance from Boulder: 2.5 hours
Adventure was near: Leadville

We left Boulder on Friday evening after winning our intramural ultimate game. Arriving at the trailhead after dark, we quickly setup our tent and went to bed. The next day we woke up and made a warm breakfast of eggs and sausage (in a metal bowl because we forgot our pan).

The trail works its way up a valley through the trees and by some streams that seem to be full of minerals. Eventually, the trail leaves the valley and switchbacks up the east side. We had spectacular views in this morning light of the mountains on the west side of the valley and of Sayres Benchmark (a mountain to our south). At the top of the ridge we were delighted to bathe in the warm sunshine. From the ridge we could also see the summit of La Plata Peak only a mile or so away.

From the ridge the trail becomes rocky and we scrambled our way up to the summit. On top there was some breeze but we enjoyed our lunch and the views. There was a great veiw of Huron Peak and the Three Apostles to our south.

After lunch we worked our way down until we got to the ridge and found a grassy area to take a break on. The break turned into a nap for Kathleen and Colin, while I explored the nearby area. From here we made our way down to the car and back to Boulder.
