Leadville Backcountry Yurts

When was the fun: Jan 8-10, 2010
Who went: Mark, Kathleen, Colin, Russel, Rebeca
Tim, Hona, Brad, Paul, Pearl, Kim, Adam
Molly, Bret, and Kyle
Length or hike: 4 hours to yurt, lots of short day hikes
Distance from Boulder: 2 hours
Adventure was near: Leadville, CO

This pair of yurts are located just above treeline and offer supurb views of the mountains to the east from their decks. The yurts are well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, nice wood stoves, a propane stove/oven, beds, and a folding table. The hike in is more challenging than other yurts I've been to. It is ~5.5 miles but has a lot of uphill on the way in. This does lend itself to a great deal of downhill that is perfect for sledding or adventurous skiing on the way out. Around the yurts are great sledding hills in a large alpine bowl or through trees (the snow was too deep for us to sled in the trees!). At the bottom of the bowl is a lake that was frozen with snow cover when we were there.

All in all, the yurts are some of the best I've been to and are close enough to Boulder to even consider a 1 nighter trip. But then I think, why not just add on an extra night for how cheap these are and have a full day to enjoy the mountains :)
